Can Your Older Air Conditioner Still Be Repaired?

Just because your air conditioner has some years on it doesn't mean it's time for the scrap heap. During our initial diagnostic evaluation, we consider several factors to determine whether repair makes sense.

Overall condition. If the compressor, condenser, and major components are structurally sound, most other issues can be fixed affordably.
Repair cost vs. replacement cost. We use the 50% rule; if repairs cost less than half of a new system and give you several more years of service, repair is usually the smart choice.
History of breakdowns. An occasional repair is normal, but if you're calling for service multiple times per season, replacement may be more cost-effective in the long term.

Refrigerant type. Systems using R-22 refrigerant (which is being phased out) can still be repaired, although refrigerant costs are typically higher.
